Science Based Target Setting
‘Science-based’ means aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement – limiting global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C. Science-based targets provide a clearly-defined pathway for companies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, preventing the worst impacts of climate change and future-proofing business growth. They are widely considered the only credible target.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a partnership between the CDP, World Resources Institute, WWF and UN Global Compact. Setting a science-based target via SBTi’s Business Ambition for 1.5°C initiative includes your business in the UNFCCC’s Race to Zero. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting. Offering a range of resources and guidance, the SBTi independently assesses and approves targets in line with its strict criteria.
